Double Axis Tracker

The incidence angle of solar radiation in solar cells is very important parameter to maximize performance. The maximum yield is obtained for vertical incidence. Obviously this is not possible for PV panels that are placed on a fixed basis. Thus, is needed a mobile base which monitors the movement of the sun throughout the day and for all seasons.

The double axis trackers alter not only the azimuthally but also the elevation angle accurately monitoring the movement of the sun and achieving maximum efficiency.

For the Greek facts the solution with trackers has clear advantages over the fixed support and must be chosen, provided there is available space. E.g. park for 100 kW is sufficient for 3 acres fixed support, but requires approximately 6 acres for a solution with single to double axis.

Tracker advantages:

• Increasing energy production by 60% in summer and 15% in winter
• Proven resistance to wind >200km/h (>55m/s)
• Ideal for small and medium power of photovoltaic plants

Double axis tracker disadvantages:
The disadvantage may include :

• The increased investment cost.
• The existence of two moving parts which increases the complexity of the system.
• The need for consumption of an electrical energy quantity for the rotation(movement) systems.
• The increased maintenance cost.
