During the designing of an autonomous system, the batteries should be selected with such a manner in order to be at least 50 - 80% charged. The deep cycle and uncontrolled discharge of batteries can greatly decrease the lifespan.

Generally, the smaller the depth of battery discharge, the greater will be their life expectancy. This means that it is better to obtain batteries with a capacity large enough to last longer than to be forced to replace them after 2-3 years.
